Childhood Obesity-getting Your Kids Off The Couch

May 16th, 2008 ScarlettCapelli Posted in Family Concerns | No Comments »

In today’s society, childhood obesity is becoming a growing concern. In this age of fast-food dinners and video games your child may be eating foods that are high in fat and calories and then sitting on the couch for hours on end playing video games. It may be time to get your child moving and exercising. There are several steps that you can take to help your child live a healthier life style.

The first thing that you need to do is to teach your child to eat healthier. In the world of working mothers and two-income families, it may seem that fast food is the best way to get everybody fed. In reality, there are many healthy meals that can take the same amount of time to prepare that it takes you to drive to the restaurant, sit in the drive-thru line, order your food, and drive back home. There are also foods that can be fixed the night before and placed in the slow cooker first thing in the morning. The food cooks all day and is ready as soon as you get home from work. There are many microwavable foods available at the grocery store also. Another advantage of having a microwave oven is the ability to defrost foods quickly if you forgot to pull something out for dinner.

To create a healthy meal, you should have a meat, a vegetable, bread, a dairy, and a fruit. While this may sound complicated, a plate of spaghetti with parmesan cheese, a salad, bread, and a can of peaches with a glass of milk would cover all these groups and would take about fifteen minutes to fix. Another way to help your kids eat healthy is to remove all the junk food from your house and replace it with healthy snacks. Replace a bag of potato chips with cheese and crackers. Replace those cheese curls with celery sticks smeared with peanut butter. The children may complain at first about losing their favorite snack foods, but once there is nothing else in the house they will eventually eat these healthier alternatives.

The next step to helping your children to become healthier is to get them active. The first thing that you should do is to limit the amount of time spent in front of the television. The same thing should be done with computer and video games. Once the children no longer have the television and games to occupy their time, they will become bored. You could now suggest that you all go outside for a walk or go for a bicycle ride. If it is cold outside, you could suggest sledding or ice skating. Anything that will give your children some fresh air and exercise would be a good idea.

Children learn good eating and exercise habits from their parents. You should serve as a model for your children by eating right and staying active. By including the whole family in these outdoor events will give everyone some much needed exercise and is also a chance to spend some quality time with your children, something that we could all use a little more of.

Swimming Lessons For Babies

May 16th, 2008 SandyNaidu Posted in Family Concerns | No Comments »

Mums and Bubs swimming lesson sessions are designed for babies aged between 6 and 24 months. Mothers or fathers go into the pool with the babies. Not every swim school will offer these lessons. So ring around and pick the one that you are most comfortable with. Make sure that all the lessons are conducted by a qualified instructor. . In Australia these sessions are usually called ‘Mums and Bubs Swimming Lessons’. Dads if you are reading this, it should not discourage you from taking your baby to the swimming lesson (and give mum a break).

The main aim of these swimming lessons is to instill water confidence in the babies. The whole lesson is designed to be a lot of fun. Every class usually has around 8 adults in it. Lots of rhymes are sung…There are usually some water toys as well…

Lot of children can be quite happy in water but when it comes to putting their face under water, they get a bit scared…These lessons slowly introduce the idea of putting the face under water…If your child is very uncomfortable the most important thing is for you to be relaxed…Be patient and encouraging. In time the child will be fine. Babies are also introduced to the concept of blowing bubbles in water…I remember when I took my daughter to these classes, at the end of each class, the babies were made to sit on the side of the pool…We sang ‘Humpty Dumpty’ to them and then at the end of the rhyme we encouraged them to leap forward into our hands…Most of the babies quite enjoyed this little game.

It is important for parents to realize that the aim here is not to teach your babies to swim…The aim is to instill water confidence in them…Don’t expect too much from them. Don’t be upset if your child does not take to the water straight away…I am telling this from my own experience…I have seen kids who were uncomfortable in the first sessions but grew up to become excellent swimmers. Supervise them at all times. Hold them and don’t think they can swim just because they are attending these swim classes. These classes don’t remove the risk of drowning. So have fun but keep safety in mind at all times. If you for some reason don’t prefer these swimming classes, then you can take your child to a public pool. This will probably be a bit cheaper. You can make up your own routine and have fun with your baby in the toddler pool. Take some water toys and may be even a water noodle. Sing and make the whole process lot of fun.

Always remember that kids can drown in the shallow end as well…So supervise them at all times. And just to be on the safe side it is probably a good idea for all parents to learn CPR and rescue methods. Some public pools have a small picnic area as well. After the fun at the pool, you both can have a picnic too. And one more thing - make sure that the water is nice and warm. Babies normally get quite tired after a swimming lesson. So the good news is that they will probably take a long nap after the swimming lesson (hopefully).

Swimming Lessons For Kids

May 16th, 2008 SandyNaidu Posted in Family Concerns | No Comments »

Most children start taking swimming lessons from around 3 years of age. Here are a few tips for making this whole process of learning swimming a pleasant one:

Picking the Right Swim School: Do your research and pick the right school. You need a school which is caring, friendly plus uses the right techniques to teach swimming. Speak to your friends and get their recommendation as well. Don’t pick a school solely based on its proximity to where you live. Also, different schools use different teaching methods. Some swim schools concentrate very heavily on getting the stroke right - right from the first class. Others concentrate on stroke correction at a much later stage.

Preparation for the Swim Class: It is probably a good idea to buy a water proof swimming bag. - good investment. Before you leave for the class, check that you have a towel, swimming costume, swim cap, googles and a spare outfit to change into.

If you have trouble getting the swim cap on to your child’s head, put some talcum powder into the cap and rub it so that it spreads evenly across the inside of the swim cap. Make sure the swim googles are not too tight. If your child shivers a lot when in water, then this will make your child uncomfortable. Rub Vaseline on your child’s leg and other exposed parts of the body. This will reduce the shivering. If it is still a major problem, then buy a specially designed swim suit – a suit specifically designed to make you feel warmer.

Your child should not have any food for at least 1 to 2 hours before her/his swimming lesson.

Floaties: Different parents have different views about floaties…Some schools don’t mind if your child uses floaties but others strictly frown upon them. They believe that floaties give your child a false sense of security and comfort. They believe that when a child is off floaties, he or she will find it difficult to learn and adjust - they might get too accustomed to them.

During The Swimming Lessons: Don’t put too much pressure on your child. Every child learns swimming in their own time. If you are however unhappy with the teacher, let the teacher or the supervisor know. It is probably good for the teacher to receive some feedback as well. Be patient and encouraging. Don’t push and have huge expectations. Most schools have levels – different kids are at different levels. And as they get better, they advance through the levels. Don’t put pressure on the teacher to move the child forward to a different level. Trust their judgment and this makes it easier for everyone.

After The Swimming Lesson: Give your child a shower after every lesson (however clean the pool is). The kids can get very hungry after a swimming lesson. I normally take a snack with me so that I can give it to them after tidying up.

Holiday Swimming Activities: If you feel your child needs extra classes, then holidays can be a good time to book the child in for extra lessons. Holidays are quite relaxed and your child can improve their swimming at a quicker pace - without any added pressures of home work etc.

Five Ways To Build A Relationship With Your Future Mother In Law

May 16th, 2008 TiffanyR. Posted in Family Concerns | No Comments »

After years of working on weddings, there is one character that I have come to pity: the mother of the groom. Most of the attention at weddings, aside from that given to the couple, is placed on the mother and father of the bride. The parents of the groom are largely left out of the planning process and the wedding day seems structured to lavish attention on the bride and her family: her mother helps her to get dressed, her father walks her down the aisle and everyone recognizes the bittersweet nature of the day for the parents of the bride. While the day is just as bittersweet for the parents of the groom, their participation is typically limited to a cameo during the processional. For my part, I have made it a priority to arrange time prior to the ceremony for the parents of the groom to spend a few quiet moments with the groom. But I’ve also taken to strongly encouraging brides to forge a relationship with the mother of the groom during the planning process.

Brides, imagine for a moment how your future mother in law must be feeling. She has tirelessly and selflessly worked to ensure that her son was taken care of and has watched him grow into the man that he is today. And now she must give him over to the new lady in his life. Her feelings about your groom are as strong as your mother’s feelings about you. This is also a person, like it or not, with whom you will have a lifelong relationship. So why not start the bonding process by allowing her to participate in your wedding planning? Granted, there are experiences that you might want to share exclusively with your mother, but there are several ways to include your mother in law as well.

Have a Moms Luncheon

Soon after your engagement, reach out to your mother in law and ask her to join you for lunch. If you’d like, you can also invite your mom to this meeting as well. This is the opportunity for her to get to know you outside of your relationship with her son. Tell her that you would like for her to be involved in the planning as much as possible. This sets in place a positive foundation on which you can build throughout the planning process.

Keep her in the loop about your plans

Be sure to include your future mother in law in your wedding related emails and/or newsletters and ask for her input on wedding details (i.e., bridesmaid dresses, flowers, vendors, etc.)

Invite her to vendor meetings

As previously stated, there may be moments that you wish to share alone with your mom, most notably your dress fittings, but there are also several places where your future mother in law can assist. Invite her to important meetings such as the tasting with the caterer, the walk through of the venue, and meetings with the florist. During the meetings, make a special effort to ask her what she’s thinking about your plans.

Allow her to assist in planning the bridal shower and rehearsal dinner

Of course, you will not be involved in planning your bridal shower, but you should mention your desire to include your mother in law in the planning to your maid of honor or designated planner. Traditionally, the groom’s parents are in charge of the rehearsal dinner however, many couples are now taking on this responsibility themselves. If this is the case, be sure to ask for input from your mother in law and definitely give her the chance to have words at the dinner.

Keep in touch after the wedding

After the wedding is over, you should continue building your relationship with your mother in law. Don’t limit your interaction with her to times when your husband is involved. Take the initiative to call, visit and hang out with her on a regular basis.

Like any relationship, your relationship with your mother in law will take some work, but it is certainly worth it in the end. A great mother in law can be a good friend, shopping partner and someday, the perfect babysitter!

The Different Types Of Greek Helmets

May 16th, 2008 JohnHilde Posted in Education | No Comments »

Ancient Greek war helmets are some of the most recognizable in the historic war machines. The term “Greek helmets” is quite broad. There is really no one helmet that signifies the Greek culture. Trojan helmets, Spartan helmets, and Corinthian helmets are all under the heading of Greek helmets. In the following paragraphs, you will learn a little bit about each.

Some of the most popular helmets for collectors and reenactments are the Trojan war helmet. There are several different designs that are sold in stores, but they are very similar. The biggest difference between them is the color of the helmet and plume itself. For example, you’ll find Trojan helmets in silver, black, brass, and bronze. In fact, one even comes in a war paint camouflage color. The plumes will come in a variety of orange, red, and black. If you are looking for the most historical Trojan helmet, the black and bronze were the most common in ancient days. This example of a helmet is found in the movie “Troy.” The Trojan helmets in the movie have the signature curving cheek guard and it is made of bronze to give it that brownish color. That in combination with a black or red plume will finish up your costume nicely.

Spartan helmets are also a very popular sort of helmet. Recently made famous in the movie “300”, these helmets come in two basic designs. The first is a plain silver (made of iron and steel) helmet in a basic design. No plume is attached. This was worn by the common Spartan foot soldiers who did the brunt of the fighting. Some of the elite soldiers or leaders of the Spartans wore a helmet with a red plume. This helmet retained the same design as the foot soldier helmet except that it had a large plume with a tail end. This was to increase the apparent height of the soldier and add to the intimidation factor.

Corinthian helmets had a very similar design to Spartan helmets in terms of the “face” of the helmet. Where they differ is that the frontal cheek guards a bit longer than the Spartan helmets. Also, these Greek helmets are usually made of brass or a black metal. These also had a plume often made of horse hair, and the crest holding the plume was made out of a quality leather and wood. Today’s replicas will be made with a synthetic hair or more expensive ones will come with real horse hair.

To complement your Greek helmet you may want to consider adding a full set of Greek armor to your collection. The Royal Greek Muscle Cuirass is a nice complement to many Greek helmets, and it usually includes a belt to complete a full costume. Greek armor often had “defined muscle” on the abs and chest. This further intimated the enemy with the illusion that all the soldiers were bursting with strength. Once you get these items for collection they will make a great display on your wall or on a simple stand.

John Hilde is a historical armor and weapons collector. He also owns his own online retail store that sells these collectibles for costumes, plays, and reenactments. To learn more about Greek helmets go to http://www.armorvenue.com.

The Stress Of Modern Living Propels Ancient Science Into Limelight

May 16th, 2008 HelenThomas Posted in Education | No Comments »

In order to fully appreciate the powerful role of Ayurveda in restoring health, you need to understand how it helps you handle stress, which is at the root of many ailments big and small. Dr. Hans Selye, the pioneering researcher who practically invented the concept of stress, defined it rather poetically: “Stress is anything from a passionate embrace to a boring game of chess.” Of course it is also a sock to the jaw, a pink slip, a divorce, a ring in your teenage daughter’s nose (or your own parents’ not letting you have a nose ring). Stress can be a windowless office with an uncomfortable chair or the knowledge that our species is destroying the natural environment.

Stress, then, can be anything that comes knocking on your door, but it is not necessarily the Big Bad Wolf himself, threatening to blow your house down. Rather the Big Bad Wolf is within you; it is your reaction to any event you believe to be stressful. You can either digest the stressful feelings and convert them to useful energy that helps you grow and develop or you can have trouble digesting stress and create ama, which tires out and depletes the nervous system and overworks the immune system, which in turn leaves the door open to illness.

So what happens when we are under stress? When we perceive something to be stressful, an internal alarm goes off, triggering a cascade of physiological changes that was originally described by Selye as a fight-or-flight response. Adrenaline floods the bloodstream, the heart beats faster; digestion screeches to a halt, muscles tense up, blood pressure skyrockets, the brain and senses become hyperalert. This response is designed to enable to us to fight for our lives or to get us away from the danger as fast as possible. It worked well for our ancestors because their stressors were mainly of the saber-toothed tiger variety. Stresses were immediate and short-lived, and once the dangerous situation was over, the body was designed to return to normal.Today life is not so simple or clear-cut. Instead a saber-toothed tigers we’re continually barraged by little day-to-day hassles job insecurity or frustration, exasperating children, traffic jams, lack of fulfillment-that are difficult to fight or escape from. Nor is the stress response so simple and clear-cut. I now know that the way a person responds to stressful situations depends in part on the way he or she has learned to cope. necessarily harmful.

Fear, anger, and so on-these are all good, natural human emotions under certain conditions. But if they are not resolved and metabolized by your agni (that is, “digested”), they become stressful. The more stress we perceive, and the less able we are to cope with it, the less we are able to recover from it, and the less we are able to deal with new stressors.Prolonged stress wreaks all sorts of havoc: It can contribute to fatigue, diabetes, hypertension, ulcers, loss of libido, and reduced resistance to disease. Emotional upset can throw women’s periods off kilter, reduce fertility, and make menopause more difficult. Feeling stressed affects your ability to work, to think clearly, and to have satisfying social relationships. In animal experiments stress has accelerated aging and death, hastened the spread of cancer, and promoted heart attacks. In 1993 the U.S. Public Health Survey estimated that 70 to 80 percent of Americans who visit physicians suffer from a stress-related disorder.

Why Instructors Are Concerned About Plagiarism

May 15th, 2008 PhilForp Posted in Education | No Comments »

In order to understand plagiarism, it is worthwhile to understand and respect the process of sharing and creating new ideas in the university setting. First, it should be understood that all knowledge is built from previous knowledge. Very little that we do within the world of academics or business would be possible if it were not for those who went before us. As we read, study, experiment, and gather perspectives, we are merely “standing on the shoulders of giants”. This is not to say that all that can be learned has been, it just simply means you realize the process of knowledge is less about the individual and more about fields of study. However, by building on other people’s ideas, we hopefully create our own original thought.

So what happens when you put your ideas down on paper? When you do this your instructors will be able to distinguish between the building block ideas borrowed from other people and your own newly reasoned perspectives or conclusions. When you write a research paper or essay you make these distinctions by citing the sources for your building block ideas. On a side note, giving clear credit for your ideas matters in the professional community as well as the academic community.

So why are professors so strict about citing sources? Think of it this way: in the vast majority of assignments you’ll be assigned while attending university, your instructors will ask you to read something. OK, easy enough. These assigned books, journals, essays, and papers are the building blocks for your new thought. Upon reading you assigned work, generally the next step is for you to write a paper in which you analyze one or more aspects of what you just read. Thus your opportunity to explore the new structure you build. If that is too abstract, let’s keep it simple. When instructors are asking you to site your work they really want to know the following things:

• First and foremost they want to know that you actually read the assigned work.

• Second, they want to see that you have a clear understanding of the material you’ve been asked to read. By the time you reach university the instructor’s job is to challenge you as a student, not simply supply you with facts.

• Third, professors want to see you refer to your sources to support the ideas you have developed. Professors will generally only assign books or essays by authors that they respect. Thus citing specific pieces of an authors work gives the professor a chance to see whether or not you were able to pick out the key concepts.

• Fourth, and probably the most important, professors want to see that you can distinguish your analysis from the author’s analyses. Anyone can recite, but analysis takes more work.

Lastly, remember that when you cite a source you are using an expert’s ideas as proof or evidence of your new idea. It is important to communicate this clearly to the reader. Do not think of sources as a way of filling your paper with random facts, professors want to know what you think.

Project-43 Worldwide Talent United

May 15th, 2008 RobertBenson Posted in Entertainment | No Comments »

Can a heavy metal rock group release a CD without having ever being in the same room together or to have never met face to face? Amazingly, it is being done; and quite remarkably. Project-43 is one of the first “Internet” groups to record, mix, produce and engineer a CD from three different countries and five locations around the world.

Meet Project-43, five exceptionally talented musicians from different parts of the globe. After band mates Charlie Wardick (who hails from the state of Arizona, USA) and Steve M. Mann (from Wisconsin, USA) hooked up on Usenet in the alt.guitar newsgroup, they knew that they had happened upon something special.

Using this framework, the two enlisted other musicians to join in their cyberspace journey. When Antti Heikkinen (Finland) was added on vocals, things began to gel. The group then added Scotland’s Scott Wallace to play drums and the NYC guitar virtuoso Christopher Bell-Boudreaux to complete the quintet.

Their debut CD “Silence The Quiet” was released and met with rave reviews. But it is their follow up CD called “Ticket To Infinity” that proves that this is not a novelty act and that creating intoxicating heavy metal music in this unique process can not only be done, but accomplished with awe inspiring adventure.

Logistics make it difficult to all get together, but that is not an obstacle. As Steve explains:

“We have really progressed on this new CD; it shows our growth and improvement as a group. One person may come up with an idea for a song, then the others download this ‘model’ and start to add their parts and the mixing process begins. We don’t have some of the personality issues or conflicts that other bands have; our process is very accommodating to growth and helps us move forward. We feel we are on the cutting edge of recording and marketing and like to feel that we are moving forward in the right direction; kind of a modern spin as well as a new model of music creativity.”

After a listen to their new CD, one can hear elements of some of the band member’s influences, such as the Scorpions, Judas Priest, Queensryche or even a heavy set from Foreigner. But what Project-43 does so eloquently is meld these aforementioned groups, classic rock qualities, and heavy guitars and move them progressively into the new millennium.

The cut, “Bye Bye” has a classic blend of eerie lyrical content blended perfectly with instrumental mastery, fast guitar licks and the powerhouse pipes of lead singer Antti Heikkinen. “Secrets Never To Be Told” would be right at home on any classic rock album by Uriah Heep, complete with rich vocals, heavy rock guitars and a rapid-fire lead that adds a unique harmony to the lead vocals.

The cut “In Exile” could remind some if Alice In Chains unplugged, with smart lyrics and crisp acoustics, with tasty contributions from all five musicians. “Silence The Quiet” is full of classic Scorpions-like riffology, with complex instrumental structures and superlative vocals and I could see it bolting to the top of the heavy metal charts.

Their whole CD is full of energized music, heavy guitars and bass lines and expert musicianship. Comparing Project-43 to other bands may be a compliment, but it is their unique methods of making emotionally charged rock and roll that makes them genre defining and captures the essence of their collective musicianship.

Could Project-43 be called musical experimentalists? If so, the group has definitely laid the groundwork for others to attempt to make music in this intuitive manner. But I doubt that any group can match the hard-edged, slashing guitar riffs and seminal melodic invention that Project-43 has already mastered. Cyber group, novelty act? Not a chance- their songs are a musical collective of hard, heavy rock that will soon take the music world to a whole different level.

Last Minute Mother’s Day Flower Suggestions

May 15th, 2008 AmyNutt Posted in Family Concerns | No Comments »

Mom is a very special person. She got us through those awkward times growing up, taught us about life, and even made sure we got better when we were sick. That is why Mother’s day is such a special day. It is a day that is designated for us to tell mom that she did a good job and that we appreciate her for everything she did for us while we were growing up and for the things that she does now. Even though a bouquet of flowers is just a small representation of how we feel about her, it lets her know that we remember everything she has done throughout the years.

But it does seem that Mother’s Day sneaks up on us quickly. We become so wrapped up in the things that are happening in our lives and then look at the calendar to see that Mother’s Day is just a day or two away. Sometimes the realization doesn’t happen until the day has arrived.
